A statement from the bishops of the Anglican Church of Canada
November 01, 2001 - 

 

The Government of Canada was given responsibility by the British North America Act for aboriginal peoples. The policies our government developed to fulfill this responsibility and their implementation, in which, through the residential schools, our church played a role, have created the difficult situation in which we, as a country, find ourselves. Now, as a nation we need to grasp a dynamic, new vision of reconciliation between aboriginal peoples and other Canadians in which we can all be made whole, in which we honour the human rights of all, and in which we build together a new society of respect and honour.

Leadership of the Anglican Church of Canada (ACC), meeting here for the 36th session of General Synod, voted by a narrow majority today to defer decision on a resolution directing General Synod to break off talks with the federal government to express "dissatisfaction and disappointment" over the slow pace of negotiations with the federal government in resolving the ongoing litigation over residential schools.

Led by the Primate, Archbishop Michael Peers, a senior five-person delegation representing the House of Bishops of the Anglican Church of Canada meeting Thursday, May 17 with the Hon. Herb Gray, Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, received assurances that the federal government is now in a position to "move from dialogue to formal discussions, leading to an agreement" in the ongoing matter involving 'residential schools' litigation.
