Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, has issued this statement in response to the election of Jorge Mario Cardinal Bergoglio as Pope Francis, on March 13:

For their spring meeting, COGS members gathered at their usual setting: Queen of Apostles Renewal Centre in Mississauga, Ont. They began their day with Bible study from 9:00 to 9:30. 

An Anglican priest who ministered in British Columbia has left General Synod $480,000 in his will: $320,000 for ministry in the Council of the North and $160,000 for Global Relations and theological education. A further amount will be released to General Synod at a later date.

A new stewardship forum is the latest addition to The Community, the Anglican Church of Canada's growing online conversation space. Called "Growing Good Stewards," the forum supports people who cultivate generosity—whether personally or in their parishes. 

Col. John Fletcher, archdeacon of the Anglican Military Ordinariate of the Canadian Forces, has been appointed chaplain general and will assume command of the chaplain branch in Ottawa this fall. 

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of General Synod's new video series, God among us: Lenten videos on the Stations of the Cross. Produced by the Rev. Scott McLeod, the videos weave together art, music, and powerful narratives that show how we can seek the face of God in other people.  

I admire Pope Benedict's courage and grace in stepping down, recognizing his increasingly diminished stamina to carry out his ministry as bishop of Rome and head of the Roman Catholic Communion throughout the world. 

This year 30 new bicycle ambulances will start serving villages in Mozambique thanks to generous donors who gave more than $18,000 through Gifts for Mission, the Anglican Church of Canada's gift guide. 

The Bishop of Durham, the Right Reverend Justin Welby, has officially become the Archbishop of Canterbury at a ceremony, known as the

'Confirmation of Election', which took place in the context of an act of worship in St Paul's Cathedral today. 

Housing continues to be a joint priority for Anglicans and Lutherans as they support Bill C-400, a private member's bill calling on the government to develop a national housing strategy. Anglican and Lutheran staff leaders engaged in this issue invite local church members to connect with MPs about the bill before it goes before Parliament, Feb. 13.
